This week we turn our attention to reggae artist Mike Love. Mike Love hails from the North Shore of ‘Oahu and has gained a lot of publicity for his music as a master of technology (namely various effect pedals) and his thought provoking music. As much as seeing him stack loop after loop to create a wonderfully textured song, Love needs no electricity to capture his audiences attention. With his Nā Hōkū Hanohano award and the next tour freshly started*, Mike Love is making his way across the continental US, spreading his music and message to those who will listen.
Today we listen to a Mike Love original song, No Regrets. Though his voice and lyrics are the main dish of the song, his ‘ukulele playing is the perfectly sized plate and table setting. His choice of chords have a nice movement that follows his voice. He occasionally throws in fills but never lets his playing conflict with his singing. This is a great example of how to tastefully accompany oneself.
*Mike Love is currently on a West Coast tour with dates in both Oregon and Washington. He will even be here in Eugene on 5/27 at the WOW Hall. I’ve seen him play many times in Hawaii and I can assure you that each show is better than the last. See you there!
UkePrints is a curated playlist of some essential ukulele tracks that all ukulele player should listen to. These songs have left a legacy for future players and in essence, sound impressions of the ‘ukulele or what I like to call them: UkePrints.
