Today we are visited by multi-instrumentalist and jazz musician, Abe Lagrimas Jr. Lagrimas originally started playing the drums at the ripe age of 4 and as he and his career advanced he added both the vibraphone and the ‘ukulele to his resume. Since then he has toured while wearing his many caps playing with many great players from Benny Rietvald to Benny Chong. Lagrimas has appeared as a featured artist and sideman on many recordings and currently has a jazz ‘ukulele method book released by Berklee Press.
Abe is playing at the old HMS venue Higher Ground with a small jazz combo. Here they are playing the old chanson Autumn Leaves. Abe starts the tune by setting up the melody and continues the song by soloing over the form. He keeps a robust tone with an expressive touch even as he starts to move up the neck. Wether you find him on his personal Ko’olau ‘ukulele or on an “ABC” ‘ukulele one thing is without question, his distinctive tone.
UkePrints is a curated playlist of some essential ukulele tracks that all ukulele player should listen to. These songs have left a legacy for future players and in essence, sound impressions of the ‘ukulele or what I like to call them: UkePrints.
